The decoration was made on a buff or cream-colored plate by sponging or dusting dry, powdered, metallic oxides onto the plate after its initial firing. The seemingly contemporary, abstract look was created using colored oxide stains, which ran freely when heated in the kiln. As a result, each piece of tortoiseshell creamware is unique.
